Hawassa University, situated at the center of the great East African Rift valley, which is the only geographical feature of the planet visible from the moon, is running a wide range of academic, research and professional programs with increasing number of undergraduate and graduate students. As the largest and oldest institution of higher education and most comprehensive university in Southern Nations Nationalities and People’s Regional State (SNNPRS) of Ethiopia, the university offers courses ranging from Medicine and Health Sciences, through Natural and Physical Sciences, Technology, Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, to Law, Business, the Humanities and Arts. We are committed to excellence in teaching and in an every-increasing manner to Development Oriented Action Research. Currently, the university has three colleges, two centers, three institutes, one teaching hospital, 13 faculties, and 47 undergraduate and 19 graduate programs altogether. The university has about 20,000 students and 2500 employees. The university provides its staff and students with access to the internet, e-mail and seven studios for video conferencing to enable networking and access to world wide information resources.

The SNNPRS where the university is located is a multi-ethnic state often known as a mosaic of language and culture, with over 56 ethno-linguistic groups living in the state, more than the rest of Ethiopia put together. The region is also one of the most ecologically diverse areas in Africa. Its primary forests are famous for their natural coffee forests, the area being well known as the cradle of the Arabica species. A number of lakes, geothermal energy, and endemic species of birds, animals and plants inhabit the region. The aforementioned unique features of the area give the unique opportunity for teaching, research and international collaboration. Thus, the university is looking forward to establish academic and research partnership with US and African universities in fields of Technology, Natural Sciences, Health, Business and Economics, Humanities and Agriculture. Your interest in our university is most welcome and very much appreciated
